Laguna Madre Meet-the-Candidate Event a Success
Candidate John “Roca” Shergold’s Meet-the-Candidate Pachanga Jan. 12 in Port Isabel was a huge success.
More than 100 Laguna Madre residents attended to discuss issues pertinent to the area. Such issues as ethics, better pay and retirement benefits for teachers, and Shergold’s pledge to not accept donations from lobbyists representing electric and oil companies, were among a few of the issues discussed with those in attendance.
Unfortunately, Shergold’s opponent, incumbent State Rep. Rene Oliveira, failed to attend the event to debate and address his constituents’ concerns although he was invited to do so.
The Laguna Madre area residents shared personal stories with Shergold.
One resident, Ms. Minerva, said her electricity was shut off after she could not afford her high CPL electric bills on a fixed income.
Shergold took quick action to assist Ms. Minerva with her economic hardship and had her electricity restored so her children would not spend another night without heat.
“I believe that one reason electric rates are so high is because of the amount of money lobbyists give to politicians such as my opponent,” Shergold said. “I demand my opponent refund the thousands of dollars he has received over the years from electric company lobbyists and pledge, as I have, to not accept campaign funds from them.”
